Bob Elfant

Look at any major organization or activity in Mt. Airy and you are likely to see Bob Elfant's name associated with it. Since moving here in 1976 —he moved again in 1984, but only across the street— Bob has been heavily involved in community affairs. He has been on the boards of East Mount Airy Neighbors (EMAN), the Mt. Airy Village Development Project, Mt. Airy USA (MAUSA), and the Mt. Airy Business Association (MABA). But while he believes that organizations are important, Bob admits "process is not my strong suit." Instead, he looks for "definitive projects." Rather than sitting on boards, Bob likes "getting involved in something that needs to be accomplished," getting it done and moving on to something else. Bob has set up the street cleaning program of MABA, run a project committee for MAUSA, and organized a membership drive for EMAN, which has honored him with the Edgar Baker Award for community service.  Bob prides himself on "figuring out how to cut to the chase." And, given his business experience with the Elfant Wissahickon real estate, property management and mortgage companies, Bob is often called upon to untangle financial problems and, even more, to raise money for community events. The projects and events that could not have taken place without Bob's fund raising prowess are far too many to name. We should, however, acknowledge his most recent fund raising achievement, which was to be among the most effective members of the committee that sought contributions to the 40 Good Neighbors Commemorative Booklet you have in your hand. (Bob did this before he knew he was going to be named a Good Neighbor.)
Bob has solicited funds from many individuals and businesses in Mt. Airy. However, Bob and his companies stand among his most important contributors. Bob and Elfant Wissahickon have sponsored practically everything that can be sponsored in Mt. Airy including Little League baseball, Wild Things softball, football, and roller hockey teams. Bob has also contributed to the community directly in the way his real estate companies have operated. The practices of real estate companies can help sustain a diverse and prosperous neighborhood. While Elfant Wissahickon has properties throughout the northwest and in the suburbs, Bob has remained committed to his own community. His new business venture, the Trolley Car Diner he and Ken Weinstein plan to open on the Avenue, will undoubtedly help revitalize the Mt. Airy business district and be a new gathering spot for neighbors east and west.
