Groups launch letter-writing anti-gun push
SARAH WATSON Daily News Staff Writer
Fed up with growing gun violence in the city, two grassroots community groups are trying a new approach: lobbying their fellow citizens.

Organizers from Neighborhood Networks and the African American Coalition are launching a letter-writing campaign from residents of Northwest Philadelphia to their neighbors in Northeast Philadelphia.

The letter-writing campaign will be launched today during a town hall-style meeting in Germantown where audience members will have a chance to discuss the growing gun violence in the city. The meeting will be held at the First Methodist Church of Germantown, at 6023 Germantown Ave., from 2-4 p.m.

The goal of the campaign is to inspire Northeast residents to persuade their state legislators, House Speaker John Perzel and state Rep. Dennis O'Brien, to support a house bill giving the city authority to regulate gun purchases.

"We want to write to people in the Northeast and tell them about our experiences about surviving and living with gun violence, and ask them to urge their legislators to support the passage of gun control legislation that they are currently blocking," said Sherrie Cohen, chair of the Germantown chapter of Neighborhood Networks.

People will be writing about how gun violence has affected them personally, said Vivienne Crawford, vice chair of Neighborhood Networks.

"We have to support each other in order to get something done. This is a disease and this is infecting the entire city." *
